Soak Up the Sun in Ghana This Summer

November 1, 2021

Looking for a unique study abroad destination that allows you to experience delicious street food, stunning beaches and memorable historic sites? Then look no further than ISEP’s summer program in Ghana. Located in the capital city of Accra, the University of Ghana’s lush green campus is in a bustling area with nearby local markets, cuisine from around the globe, a quickly-evolving arts scene, historical sites, vibrant nightlife, and incredible ocean scenery. If you are interested in learning more about West African culture while enjoying a rich social experience in a local community, this program is for you!

On this program, you will spend five weeks at Ghana’s top university taking humanities and social science courses for a total of 6 U.S. credits. Coursework options include interesting and thought-provoking classes such as the History of the Black Diaspora and Art History of Ghana.

Let ISEP’s Resident Director, Theresa Kwakye, help you get the most out of your experience by arranging service and volunteer projects within your specific areas of interest. You can deepen your immersion in the community by participating in a 3-credit co-curricular service-learning experience, including 30 hours a week of hands-on experience at a local Ghanian organization. The service-learning experience is accompanied by 2 hours per week of class time to prepare for and discuss opportunities and challenges in the field.

Learn about the history of the slave trade and Atlantic slave crossing during a visit to Cape Coast/Elmina Castles and Slave Dungeons. A tour of Shai Hills historical and cultural park and an overnight excursion to Ghana’s seat of Culture, the Ashanti Region, are also included. During the Ashanti Region visit, you will get the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn to weave with Ghanaian artisans and to purchase all the Ghanian goods and food your heart (or stomach) desire during a visit to the largest market in West Africa in Kumasi.

We hope you decide to say Agoo (hello in Twi) to your next summer adventure in Ghana!
