Of all the many things I have learned while I’ve studied abroad at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand, a few stand out. After spending about four months here, I have grown in ways I would not have expected and changed my lifestyle for the better.
1. Organize your class schedule.
Personally, I was able to condense my schedule into just three days of classes, leaving me four to explore the city, travel abroad, or just relax and get work done. Being on top of scheduling and planning is a life skill that I have acquired while studying abroad. Organization and clean planning leave lots of time for you to do the things you want.
2. Make time for the places you care about.
…Instead of trying to cram every travel destination into short trips during what time you have abroad. I suggest taking a longer time out of your schedule to really appreciate the places you want to see. For me, my Shangri-La was Vietnam. I saved up all my class skips to spend a week and a half cycling in this stunning country, but I wouldn’t have been able to do this without proper planning. This was by far one of the best trips I have taken in my entire life.
3. Have a healthy fear of materialism.
Here in Bangkok, life is built around markets and consumerism. I’ve never been much a shopper myself, but I have accumulated quite a large amount of souvenirs and trinkets that I did not plan on. Bright lights and festive colors call to people on the street, drawing them to night markets and bazaars, but this can be a danger, especially for those who are easily entranced by cool items. Don’t forget you have to bring it all home in your suitcase!
Being conscious of these things will help you to have a smoother study abroad experience in Bangkok, Thailand, and can be applicable to any destination really. Preparedness is a true key. Good luck!
