Here are some tips to avoid academic disaster and to ensure success while in Ghana.
1. Talk to TAs
Teacher Assistants, or TAs, serve to ensure you understand class materials during tutorials and often grade assignments. If you are clueless on the topic or need some help, do not be afraid to ask for some help from your TA.
2. Attend Tutorials
Depending on your lecturer or class, you may have tutorials or recitations that are led by a TA. In these tutorials, you review your readings and what the lecturer went over in class.
3. On Exams, Recite EXACTLY What the Professor Taught
Unlike most American school systems, the ideal answer during exams is generally what the professor said in class or what is written in the textbook or the class handout. If you put your own interpretation, you may be at a loss when it comes to grading.
4. Form a Study Group
Working with others is always great especially when navigating a new academic system. It is typically easier to form your study groups with other international students, as sometimes local students are reserved when it comes to working with others.
5. Go to Office Hours
Lectures are generally full, with over 100 students if you are in a bigger department. Just like in the U.S., it is good for your professor to know you so that they can personally give you advice on adjusting and tips on being successful in their course.
With these tips, you can ensure that you are transitioning to the best of your ability.
