ISEP has announced the four recipients of the Annette Kade Scholarship for Fall 2022 and academic year 2022-23 programs. These ISEP students will study at French or German speaking ISEP Member Institutions.
The Annette Kade Scholarships are awarded twice annually to students from ISEP Member Institutions across the U.S. Through an essay-based application and endorsement from their home institutions, Annette Kade Scholars are awarded scholarships based on their demonstrated financial need and determination to advance their language-learning skills while immersed in an academic setting.
“The Annette Kade Scholarships is a long-term commitment for ISEP, and we’re honored to administer these awards each year – supporting our value of language learning as well as our mission to expand access and affordability across study abroad programs,” said John Lucas, ISEP President and CEO.
A grant from the Annette Kade Fund provides support for the scholarships which this year ranged between US$1,250 and US$3,000 per award. Since 2002, more than 479 ISEP students have received an Annette Kade Scholarship.

Christina Kabell from Truman State University will study at Philipps-Universität Marburg in Germany.
I was interested in foreign languages from a young age, starting with an attempt to teach myself Latin back in 5th grade. To the surprise of no one, neither that nor my later attempts to learn a variety of other languages, including Polish, Sumerian, and French, went very far. It didn’t help that almost everyone in hometown were monolingual English speakers who’d never learned another language, nor that I had no viable alternative to self-teaching. Despite the rough start, I was finally able to take proper foreign language courses in high school. Since then, I’ve studied German for five years, but I’ve never had any real chances to practice speaking it, much less with a native speaker. In going to Germany, I’ll be able to work towards my long-standing dream of truly learning another language and finally be able to personally explore perspectives not offered by my rather insular upbringing.
Keila Escalante from King’s College will study at Université Savoie Mont Blanc in France.
My native language is Spanish. I took English and French in middle school as a requirement and I started to love foreign languages. Although I learned English in middle school and high school, it was not until 2018 when I moved in the United States that I realized that once you visit a country your language skill get better. The accent, the pronunciations, specific words can each differ within a country. I stopped taking French when I moved to the United States because my new high school required me to take certain classes to graduate. My first year of college I started to take French again and I have been recovering the ways of speaking French. I recognize that I still must learn more until I feel comfortable having conversations in French. While I am abroad at Université Savoie Mont Blanc, Chambéry France, I will continue to take French Classes and live with a host family to further gain exposure to the language and culture. At my home university, King’s College, I am an English Literature major student with French and Spanish minors. When I go abroad, I will take the equivalent of 2 US courses towards my minor in French. The classes that I will take while I am abroad will be based on writing and conversation. These classes are important to me because I want to be an interpreter and a writer. I believe that languages are something interesting and give people more creativity and ideas when writing.
Martine Cardichon from Butler University will study at Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon (INSA Lyon) in France.
As a daughter of Haitian immigrants, I grew in up a household where Haitian Kreyol was always spoken with a mixture of English. Unfortunately, I never picked up the language, something I began to regret as I got older. In the 8th grade, I got the opportunity to pick a language and I chose French as it was the closest to my mother tongue. As I continued learning French in high school, I fell in love with French. I took a break in my senior year to take some more music classes but I vowed to continue my French in my college year. Due to my schedule as a double major, I was not able to fit a French class into my schedule, so when I decided to study abroad I decided a francophone country was the best way to revive my French skills. I will study at INSA-Lyon for electrical engineering. I hope not only to improve my French abroad but to experience French culture firsthand.
Mikaila Ealum from University of Southern Indiana will study at Université Savoie Mont Blanc in France.
As a Muslim in the United States, I have been exposed to many rich cultures and languages. Being around people who don’t speak English as their first language made me realize just how difficult it can be, especially when attempting to get the care you need. Therefore, I began taking French at the university level. The United States is home to many immigrants and refugees from the Afro-francophone diaspora, my father’s side included. Many of these diaspora find it difficult to get the care they need because of the language barrier and cultural differences. At my home university, I am studying French and Psychology to be able to become a therapist for these communities. While abroad, I hope to gain fluency while at Université Savoie Mont Blanc to be able to effectively communicate with others whose first language isn’t English.
About the Annette Kade Scholarship
With the generous support of The Annette Kade Fund, ISEP offers these scholarships to students at U.S. ISEP Member Institutions who plan to study French or German while abroad. Awards are made following a review of applications that focus on language learning and demonstrated financial need to study abroad. Applications include essays and an endorsement from the applicant’s home institution.
